Missing for half of training camp and then hurt for the other half, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is finally ready to play some football.
The sixth-year veteran is listed as probable on the injury report with an Achilles injury. His return against the Jaguars is positive news for a Chargers defense that could desperately use help rushing the passer.
The question is whether Merriman is the guy to help the pass rush. Merriman had only four sacks, two quarterback hits, and 11 hurries in 2010. (Hits and hurries numbers courtesy of the Football Outsiders Almanac.) The Chargers were among the three worst teams in the league in hits and hurries.
San Diego is almost fully healthy, other than at long snapper. Linebacker Stephen Cooper is doubtful with a knee injury, but the rest of the team should play.
For Jacksonville, safety Anthony Smith (foot) is questionable. Running back Deji Karim (thumb) and kick returner Scotty McGee (shoulder) are out.
