After reportedly “wowing” management at a Monday meeting during which he laid out his buckled-trousers vision for the future of the franchise, 49ers interim coach Mike Singletary looks to be a lock to return as the non-interim head coach for 2009. Per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Singletary could be named the permanent coach as soon as Monday, December 29. Barrows also reports that, if Singletary stays, offensive coordinator Mike Martz won’t. Singletary reportedly identified several potential candidates to replace Martz during the Monday meeting. We doubt that the powers-that-be would force Martz on Singletary. As we understand it, the front office didn’t want Martz when he was hired earlier this year, but former coach Mike Nolan pushed hard for the former Rams coach and Lions offensive coordinator to get the job.
