Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs didn’t talk only about his team’s rivalry with the Steelers during Friday’s appearance on The Jim Rome Show. Suggs also discussed the issue of hits on quarterbacks and the fines that often flow therefrom.
And Suggs said he’s fine with being fined.
“I’ll take a fine, if I get a good shot at a quarterback,” Suggs said. “I don’t care where I hit him, how I hit him, as long as I’m getting the job done, I’ll take it.”
So how should the league protect quarterbacks? Suggs says teams should get better tackles.
“Quarterbacks get hit,” Suggs said. “You don’t want to get hit, play defense, play something else. Go punt the ball.”
Though many will agree with Suggs’ sentiments, his willingness to take a fine proves that at some point it will take more than a fine to get the attention of certain players. And that’s a point that NBC’s Rodney Harrison made last year on October 17, after a rash of helmet-to-helmet hits. Players gladly will pay a fine -- to get their attention, the NFL has to start suspending players.
