The Jaguars are dealing with some injuries to key personnel as they try to bounce back from Sunday’s season opening loss at Philadelphia.
Safety Jonathan Cyprien will go through the NFL’s concussion protocol after being injured in the 34-17 loss to Philadelphia, Jaguars.com reported on Monday.
On offense, the Jaguars have three injury situations to watch. Tailback Toby Gerhart (ankle) is not expected to be a full practice participant when the team begins its on-field work on Wednesday, John Oehser of Jaguars.com reported Monday. Also, wideout Cecil Shorts III (hamstring) will test out his injury on Tuesday, per Jaguars.com. But there is good news regarding tight end Marcedes Lewis, who has a knee ailment but should play Sunday vs. Washington, according to Oehser.
The Jaguars’ offense had its moments on Sunday, with rookie wideout Allen Hurns’ two first-half touchdown catches helping Jacksonville to a 17-0 first-half lead. However, the Jaguars gained just 118 yards on 36 plays in the second half. For the game, Jacksonville was just 2-of-14 on third downs.
If there was a silver lining Sunday for the offense, it was the play of Hurns, an undrafted free agent from Miami (Fla.). And fellow rookie wideout Marqise Lee chipped in with six catches and 62 yards on 10 targets. These are good first steps for an offense counting on some relatively inexperienced skill-position players.
