Can Torry Holt last longer on the Patriots roster than Joey Galloway did?
It’s a fair question to ask in the wake of Wes Welker’s positive steps in recovery from ACL surgery and a note from ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss in a recent mailbag.
Now Reiss wasn’t looking to make any news. He was simply responding to a question about the team’s No. 3 receiver position.
“My sense is that the Patriots would like to see [Brandon] Tate snare that No. 3 role, but it remains a question mark, and Holt represents an insurance policy,” Reiss writes.
Tate played only two games in his rookie season because of injury, so he’s hardly a safe bet. Julian Edelman will have a role regardless of Welker’s health and rookie third-round pick Taylor Price is also battling for snaps.
We mentioned all the position battles on New England’s defense a few weeks back, but the offense also remains largely uncertain. Two of the best players at their position of the last decade, Holt and Fred Taylor, could be fighting to keep their careers alive.
