Two tailbacks among Chargers final cuts

The Chargers appear set to open the season with just two true tailbacks on their 53-man roster, as Shawnbrey McNeal and Curtis Brinkley were both axed on Saturday. Behind starter Ryan Mathews and third-down back Darren Sproles, the Bolts do have ball-carrying-capable fullbacks Jacob Hester and Mike Tolbert.

Other notable Chargers cuts, via Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Cornerback Nathan Vasher
Wide receiver Josh Reed
Quarterback Jonathan Crompton
Defensive end Derrick Jones
Wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu
Wide receiver Jeremy Williams

It’s expected that Crompton, Ajirotutu, and perhaps both McNeal and Brinkley will be re-signed to the practice squad.
