It has been a long, long time since we’ve had a post concerning former Jets first-round pick Vernon Gholston on these pages and he hasn’t been on an NFL roster since spending a little more than a week with the Rams in 2012, but it appears that he’s not ready to throw in the towel on his NFL career just yet.

Gholston tweeted last week that he was 100 percent committed to making a return to professional football and the Redskins are apparently going to give him a shot to do it. Gholston was back on Twitter Tuesday to say that he’s got a tryout with Washington as he tries to make an unexpected comeback.

Gholston was a massive disappointment for the Jets after they made him the sixth overall pick of the 2008 draft. He came to the NFL after spending his career at Ohio State making a big impact as a pass rusher, but recorded no sacks in 45 games for the Jets over three seasons. He was released in March of 2011 and disappeared from the radar after failing to make the Bears and Rams the next two summers.
