Washington shows interest in Marcus Gilchrist

Gilchrist

Early in free agency, Washington checked in on one of the better safeties available in the Class of 2015.

Chargers strong safety Marcus Gilchrist has garnered some preliminary interest from Washington, Mike Jones of the Washington Post reported Saturday.

Gilchrist, 26, has started 16 games in each of the last two seasons for San Diego, recording 153 tackles, 16 passes defended and five interceptions in that span. He ranks 94th among PFT’s top free agents. Washington’s new defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, was the Chargers’ linebackers coach the previous four seasons, so he certainly has some familiarity with Gilchrist’s game.

Washington’s safety corps looks likely to have some fresh faces in 2014. Free safety Ryan Clark retired, and strong safety Brandon Meriweather is set to be an unrestricted free agent.
