The Patriots face the Texans on Thursday night. Their temporary starter has an injury that will likely knock him out, at least temporarily. So what will they do about finding a temporary backup to the temporary replacement to the temporary starter who is subbing for the franchise quarterback who is temporarily suspended?
For now, no one knows.
Whatever they do, they’ll have to do it quickly. The list of available free agents with experience in the system is short (one of them is Tim Tebow, the others are Ryan Lindley and Matt Flynn), and it makes little sense to trade for someone who knows the offense if that person will be No. 4 on the depth chart or cut by the end of the month.
Whatever they do, it’s safe to say the Patriots have a plan for it. Bill Belichick, who deliberately chose not to add another quarterback during Tom Brady’s suspension, surely has considered what he will do if Jimmy Garoppolo is injured and only Jacoby Brissett remains. The rest of us will find out what that plan is, soon.
