All of us were surprised that the actor Rob Lowe was attempting to break major NFL news on Twitter this week by writing that he’s heard Peyton Manning will retire. And Lowe was surprised by how many people reacted to his tweet.
Lowe said in an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show that he didn’t realize the extent to which what he thought was a relatively innocuous tweet would take off.
“I tweet every week about sports,” Lowe said. “About who they should fire, who they should hire. I do, I’m like a regular guy who has his opinions on stuff. So I was tweeting that I heard this might be in the offing. And then you learn the power of Twitter. That’s a powerful, powerful medium.”
Lowe said he loves Manning and hopes to watch him for years to come.
“I’m a huge, huge, huge, huge Peyton Manning fan,” Lowe said to applause from Ellen’s audience. “The best ever. . . . I hope it is not true because 18 is my favorite.”
DeGeneres grilled Lowe about who his secret source was, but Lowe declined.
“Ellen, I could tell you,” Lowe said. “But then I’d have to kill you.”
