Zach Ertz on Evan Mathis: We need guys that are going to come in every day

Guard Evan Mathis continues to stay away from Eagles workouts and a couple of his teammates don’t sound like they’re spending the days pining for his return.

Left tackle Jason Peters said he doesn’t know if Mathis would start ahead of Allen Barbre at left guard if and when he does report to work with the team and said “not really” when asked if he’d miss Mathis if he ends up elsewhere. Tight end Zach Ertz said he’d love to have Mathis on the team, but quoted a college coach saying “out of sight, out of mind” and said the team was focused on the players who have been taking part in the program.

“If you go against Chip [Kelly], I’ve think we seen ... if you don’t buy in, we’ve seen what happens,” Ertz said, via Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com. “Not to say that as a threat in any way, but we want guys that love the process each and every day, whether it’s June 1 or January 1 or February 6, whatever day the Super Bowl is. We need guys that are going to come in each and every day and work and I think that’s what we’re building right now.”

Mathis has not missed any mandatory work this year, which makes the start of minicamp next week a significant moment in the impasse with the team. If he misses all three days, the team can fine him $63,000.
