The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider reports Trent Sherfield has been “a frequent target” in Broncos training camp.
A core contributor on special teams for most of his career, Sherfield’s best offensive season as a pro came in 2022 when he caught 30 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns with the Dolphins. The only other year in which he produced 100-plus receiving yards came in his 2018 rookie campaign. Head coach Sean Payton praised Sherfield for his field-stretching abilities and the work he’s done in camp as a run blocker. Given his career arc at this point, it’s hard to imagine there being a meaningful offensive role for Sherfield entering his eighth season. That said, the Broncos mixed and matched their receivers for much of last season, with Courtland Sutton and Devaughn Vele being the only two to surpass 315 routes run, per PFF. It wouldn’t be surprising if we looked back on this moment as nothing more than training camp buzz, but it’s something for fantasy managers to remember who may be eyeing secondary targets like Vele or Marvin Mims late in drafts.

Broncos signed WR Trent Sherfield Jr., formerly of the Vikings, to a two-year contract.
Sherfield Jr. caught just eight passes in 2024 for 83 yards with one touchdown, but he was a key cog in the Vikings’ special teams. He should assume a similar — maybe identical — role with Denver in 2025.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #16
Vikings agreed to terms with WR Trent Sherfield, formerly of the Bills, on a one-year contract.
Sherfield’s odds of re-signing in Buffalo evaporated after the Bills inked Curtis Samuel. Journeyman Sherfield caught 11 balls in 17 games for the Bills last season, failing to compete for targets even as the Bills dealt with serious depth issues in their receiver corps. Minnesota, meanwhile, has one of the league’s deepest wideout groups. It’s not a given Sherfield makes the 53-man roster.

Gabe Davis (knee) will not play in the Divisional Round against the Chiefs.
Davis sprained his PCL in Week 18 and will now miss a second game because of the issue. Davis didn’t practice this week, putting his status for the AFC Championship, should Buffalo make it, in doubt as well. Khalil Shakir will step in as the team’s No. 2 receiver once again. Shakir has nine grabs for 136 yards and a touchdown over the past two weeks. Deonte Harty and Trent Sherfield will both see an uptick in routes as well.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #13
Bills WR Gabe Davis (knee) has been ruled out for Super Wild Card Weekend against the Steelers.
Davis was always a long shot to suit up against the Steelers after sustaining a knee injury in Week 18’s win against the Dolphins. Trent Sherfield and Khalil Shakir will likely see a spike in routes and possibly targets with Davis sidelined. Buffalo’s offense becoming one of the NFL’s run heaviest units means no one outside Stefon Diggs and possibly Dalton Kincaid will see meaningful looks in a snow game against Pittsburgh.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #16
Bills WR Trent Sherfield (ankle) won’t practice on Wednesday.
Sherfield was hurt in the first half of Week 10’s loss to the Broncos and did not return to the game. Wednesday’s practice was just a walkthrough, so his absence isn’t necessarily a sign he’ll miss Week 11. While Sherfield is just a depth piece on the Bills, the team recently fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, so it’s unclear if the offensive scheme or personnel will change at all in the coming weeks.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #16
Trent Sherfield caught 2-of-3 passes for 18 yards in Week 3 against Washington.
Sherfield was a big winner in the preseason and seemed to really impress the Bills’ coaches. However, he was dinged up to start the season, and these are his first two catches of the year. The Bills don’t really have a third receiver behind Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, so there is a chance for the former Miami Dolphins receiver to work himself into a larger role if he can prove to Josh Allen that he’s a sure-handed receiver, who can help move the sticks.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #10
The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia believes Khalil Shakir has fallen to fifth on the Bills’ receiver depth chart.
The second-year pro entered camp as the favorite for slot duties between Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis but has instead tumbled behind Trent Sherfield and Deonte Harty. Not exactly imposing competition. It’s also bad news for the Bills, who will once again lack a legitimate third weapon in the receiver corps. It places more pressure on first-rounder Dalton Kincaid to make an instant impact. Harty was the primary slot man in Saturday’s preseason game against the Steelers.
  • BUF Wide Receiver #16
Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey said WR Trent Sherfield “has done a tremendous job of learning things and adds a lot to the offense.”
After standing out in spring practices, Sherfield has asserted himself as the favorite for WR3 duties in Buffalo during training camp. The veteran, who caught 30 passes for 417 yards and three scores last year with the Dolphins, is competing with Khalil Shakir for snaps alongside Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis. Sherfield would only have fantasy value in deeper formats.
  • DEN Wide Receiver #5
The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia reports Bills free agent addition Trent Sherfield has “stepped up and been a favorite of Josh Allen’s.”
Per Buscaglia, Sherfield has “stood out the most this spring” in the competition to serve as the Bills’ No. 3 wideout. He is competing with second-year pro Khalil Shakir and Deonte Harty. The fantasy community has been hoping it will be Shakir, who forced his way onto the field for some rookie action last year. It’s not surprising veteran Sherfield is looking good in pad-less practices. The job will be won or lost in training camp. Whoever takes it home could have some WR5 bench value.
