Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker helped bring the story to the big screen of Rwanda’s first national cycling team and the country’s flag bearer at the 2012 Olympics.

“Rising from Ashes” follows Jock Boyer, the first American to compete in the Tour de France, and the Rwandan cycling team on a six-year journey up to the London Olympics. In the film is Adrien Niyonshuti, who became the first Rwandan cyclist to make the Olympics last year.

Niyonshuti placed 39th in the mountain bike event in London.

The film opened in New York and Los Angeles on Aug. 2 and is spreading through the country over the next two months.

The New York Times reviewed the film here.
