Rio golf course will be ready for Olympic test event, IOC official says
The Rio Olympic golf course will be ready for an Olympic test event, slated for late 2015 or early 2016, the International Olympic Committee executive director said in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.
“We are satisfied on the progress we see today,” IOC executive director Gilbert Felli said, according to The Associated Press. “But we are not playing tomorrow. We know that we are going to play for the test event.”
Construction delays have set back the course for the first Olympic golf tournaments since 1904.
A lawsuit was brought against the course developer three weeks ago. A judge asked city and course officials and those concerned about the course being built in a nature reserve to compromise last week, according to the AP.
A test event was originally hoped to be played one year before the Olympics.
