AUGSBURG, Germany (AP) -- Bundesliga team Augsburg has appointed Dirk Schuster as its new coach - replacing Markus Weinzierl, who is moving to Schalke.

Schuster took Darmstadt from the third division to the Bundesliga in straight seasons. The team finished 14th last month, securing another season in the top flight. It was level on points with 12th-placed Augsburg.

Augsburg said Thursday that Schuster is getting a three-year contract.

Weinzierl’s contract with Augsburg ran until 2019. However, Augsburg said it has agreed with Schalke to let him leave.

Weinzierl replaces Andre Breitenreiter, who was let go by Schalke.
