On Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Red Bull Arena, history was made.
Abby Wambach became the highest goalscorer in international history.
Wambach surpassed former USWNT star Mia Hamm by scoring four times in a 5-0 win against South Korea to reach 160 goals for the US women’s national team.
Hamm’s previous record-breaking total of 158 was deemed insurmountable by many but Wambach has now scored 160 goals in 207 games, while Hamm scored 158 in 275 matches.
Record-breaking in every way imaginable, it was an incredibly special night for Wambach and the USWNT in Harrison, New Jersey.

After the match 33-year-old Wambach reflected on her incredible achievement and spoke of what lies ahead (presumably more goals) in the future. And with no end in sight to her career, Wambach is keen to keep scoring for the USWNT and is already thinking about someone who could one day break the record she has just set.
“It has never been my goal to break any world records,” Wambach said. “Especially one that my idol Mia Hamm had set. My personal goal would be to assist on many more Alex Morgan goals, so that she one day could break my record.”

While Wambach also revealed one more World Cup title in 2015 would be the icing on the cake. “And or course the 2015 World Cup title, I would love nothing more than to bring that home for us.”
And President Barack Obama congratulated Wambach on shattering the world scoring record, sending out this tweet.
Congratulations @AbbyWambach, the greatest goal scorer in the history of women's soccer—you've made your country proud. #ChasingAbby
