2016 Navy-Notre Dame game in Jacksonville made official

Late last week it was reported that the neutral-field location for the 2016 game between Navy and Notre Dame could be revealed this week. Wednesday, that report came to fruition.

As expected, it was announced by the Jacksonville Sports Council that the annual rivalry game between the service academy and Catholic institution will be played in its city Nov. 5, 2016. The game will be played at the EverBank Field, home of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

One week prior to that, the same stadium will play host to the annual World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party between Florida and Georgia.

“I would like to thank Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk and the Naval Academy for entrusting us with the time-honored tradition of the Navy-Notre Dame game,” said JSC president and CEO Jim Catlett of the squad that will serve as the home team in this game.

As noted by the Orlando Sentinel, "[t]his will be the second time Notre Dame and Navy have played in the state of Florida as both teams met in Orlando in 2000.”

The 2016 game will mark the 90th consecutive year the two programs have faced off in football. As it is, the current 88-game streak makes it the longest uninterrupted intersectional rivalry in college football, with the first game in the series being played in 1927.

The 2015 game will be the first between the two side in which Navy was a member of a conference, having officially joined the AAC earlier this month.
