Via TideSports.com, Alabama running back Dee Hart was arrested Sunday and charged with giving false information and possession of marijuana, both misdemeanors. Hart was booked and released from jail on a $1,300 bond Sunday evening.
Hart’s marijuana charge was second-degree possession, which is considered by state law an amount for personal use.
Formerly rated by Rivals as the top running back in the recruiting class of 2011, Hart has 43 carries for 166 yards and one touchdown in two seasons playing for the Crimson Tide.
He’s not the first college student to be caught with a bit of weed, though if Nick Saban suspends him Alabama can surely turn to one of the 18 other four or five-star running backs on its roster. (Only slightly exaggerating, though the Tide did see Alvin Kamara leave for the JuCo level after a disappointing first year in Tuscaloosa).
Update: AL.com’s Michael Casagrande passes along a statement from Alabama, which says Hart hasn’t been a part of the program since the Sugar Bowl. Hart is on track to earn his degree from Alabama “by the summer,” as he enrolled early in January 2011.
Update II: This story keeps getting more bizarre. Again via TideSports.com, here’s how the arrest came to be:
A gas station clerk called police Sunday night after suspecting Hart used counterfeit money at the store.
The clerk at a Texaco station on Greensboro Avenue called Tuscaloosa Police at 5:50 p.m. and reported that Hart was still in the business, said TPD spokesman Sgt. Brent Blankley.Counterfeit money? Alright then.
