The wheels are beginning significant movement forward on Kenny Hill‘s departure from College Station.
Mere hours after it was reported that the quarterback had asked for his release from Texas A&M in order to transfer, that release has been granted. During a Friday radio interview, head coach Kevin Sumlin confirmed that Hill had indeed received a release from his scholarship and, the best part, he has no restrictions on his release.
The no-restrictions aspect means that Hill can transfer to any school he desires, even those in the state of Texas, so bravo to Sumlin and A&M football for showing the class and decency in this parting of ways that not many do these days.
Sumlin added that Hill is currently “meeting with his family and figuring out what he wants to do.”
What he wants to do, apparently, is transfer to a Texas school in the Big 12. 247Sports.com first reported that Hill’s definitive destination is TCU. According to ESPN.com‘s Travis Haney, “TCU is a strong possibility for Hill.”
If the report is accurate, or if Hill lands at another FBS school, he would have to sit out the 2015 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. That one season, if TCU comes to fruition, would allow Hill to learn the offense under Trevone Boykin, who will likely enter his final season with the Horned Frogs as one of a handful of Heisman favorites.
Hill began the 2014 season as the successor to Johnny Manziel under center, but poor performance coupled with at least one unspecified off-field issue handed the job to true freshman Kyle Allen in late October.
UPDATE [8:30 p.m. ET]: While Texas A&M transfer Kenny Hill may be interested in the TCU Horned Frogs, the quarterback is still considering all of his options.
“While Kenny is indeed planning on transferring, we have not committed to any school at this time,” Hill’s father, Ken Hill, told FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman via text. “We will begin meeting with schools on the 15th of January when the dead period is over. Any previous reports suggesting we are committed to any school is simply inaccurate.”
The original reports indicated that Hill is interested in a Big 12 school located in the state of Texas. TCU could be the favorite, but the Baylor Bears, Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders are also possibilities. Baylor and Texas Tech are intriguing options, because they run similar offensive schemes as Texas A&M.
