BCS table set as bowl games are announced

A season filled with conversation defined by BCS busters will ultimately end with two big-time programs battling for the national championship.

Oregon and Auburn, the two teams who played above and beyond the caliber of all others this season, will -- as expected -- face off in the Glendale for the grand prize. The game pits two offensive juggernauts, as well as Heisman candidates, against one another. Certainly, the lead story line will be Cam Newton, his eligibility and whether or not anyone from Oregon can stop him. Thirteen other teams have been unsuccessful so far this season.

But Oregon isn’t your run-of-the-mill opponent. The Ducks are No. 1 in the country in scoring offense (yes, even more than Auburn) and I still contend that they are the most disciplined team in the country. No matter what uniforms they show up in, Oregon will be a worthy adversary.

The bottom line is that for as much as criticism as the BCS has received over the years (and rightfully so, too), there’s not a lot of doubt that the “system” got it right this year.

The Rose Bowl will feature Wisconsin and TCU; the Sugar Bowl will have Arkansas and Ohio State; the Orange Bowl Stanford and Virginia Tech and the Fiesta Bowl will match up UConn and Oklahoma.

Aside from the aforementioned Fiesta Bowl, all of the BCS games are, at least, pretty interesting -- something that hasn’t always been the case in years past.

But what about Boise State? You know, that team with the blue field who was in the national championship discussion before having their journey derailed in Nevada? They’ll be playing in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas against Utah, who stumbled down the final portion of the season themselves.

Go ahead. We’ll give you a moment to stop laughing.
