Ohio’s loss to Miami (OH) last week was Boise State’s gain when it came to qualifying for a BCS bowl this season. Because the BCS works with a short-term memory, the Broncos’ loss at the beginning of the season to an average Michigan State team would be forgiven provided Boise State won out and either 1) finished in the BCS top-12 or 2) finished in the BCS top-16 and ahead of the champion from an automatic qualifier conference.
Guess we won’t have to worry about that anymore.
The No. 19 Broncos made good on their pattern of dropping one conference game a year by losing 21-19 at home to San Diego State. The loss all but officially picks up Boise State and places them on the outside of the BCS looking in.
The non-AQ’s best hope for a representative in a BCS bowl now? Louisiana Tech is ranked in all three polls. Still, the Bulldogs would need help. The lowest-ranked AQ team that currently leads its conference is No. 20 Nebraska, which squeaked out a win over Michigan State on Saturday.
If you’re Louisiana Tech, you have to hope that someone beats the Huskers between now and early December in addition to rising nine more spots in the BCS. Right now, it’s not looking good for the so-called “little guys” of college football. Conversely, it is good news for AQ conferences looking to get another team into one of the five big games.
