Clemson honors 35th anniversary of ’81 national champs with new uniforms

To the casual college football fan, not much will look different with Clemson’s football uniforms this fall. Clemson fans will surely like the new tweak to this year’s football uniforms though.

Clemson unveiled their new football uniforms for the 2016 season, which is more of a throwback to the only national championship winning team in program history. the biggest change to the uniform is the return of the tiger paw print on the shoulders, which was a key staple of the 1981 uniforms. 35 years later, and right after once again reaching the national championship game, Clemson will suit up with a championship look in Death Valley.

My favorite line in that video is “People are always afraid of change, and when it comes to uniforms they’re no different.” Truer words have never been spoken. Clemson is undergoing more of a minor alteration in a way to pay homage to the program’s championship past, which is generally a nice way to go about any changes. The best part is this is not a one-game uniform plan. This is for the entire season, and it looks great for Clemson.

The jersey is made from the same Nike Mach Speed template the uniforms worn in the College Football Playoff were modeled from, minus the diamond Nike swoosh on the front of the jersey. The jersey is designed to use fewer seams, which reduces the weight of the jersey itself, thus allowing Clemson players to have a speed advantage. Nike’s latest uniform, the Vapor Untouchable Uniform, will start rolling out this season. Oregon was the first program to wear the latest Nike uniform in last seaosn’s Alamo Bowl (considering the end result of that game, that probably was not the best advertisement for the new uniform template).
