You had your appetizers and your featured meal last night during the annual college football awards show. Now it is time for some desert (while you save room for the Heisman Trophy announcement to come tomorrow), and what better dessert this time of year than a slice of pie. The folks at SB Nation have just what college football’s award season needed by introducing The Piesman Trophy this season. The announcement of this year’s Piesman Trophy winner will be made tonight at 6:30 p.m. eastern. The announcement will be streamed live right here.
What is The Piesman? It is an award crafted to honor outstanding feats of athletic achievement by football players not necessarily known for their outstanding athletic skill, to put it kindly. Think of your typical fat guy touchdown or Baylor’s LaQuan McGowen catching a pass out of the tight end position. These are the kinds of plays that warrant consideration for the first ever Piesman, which will have an actual trophy to hand out as well.
This year’s finalists are Michigan State’s Jack Allen for his touchdown run against Penn State, Southeastern Louisiana’s Ashton Henderson for a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown and Miami’s Jermaine Grace for a fumble return for a touchdown against Georgia Tech. You can see more about the finalists, including clips of Piesman moments, on SB Nation.
