Ed Sabol, the founder of NFL Films, passed away Monday at the age of 98. The vision Sabol had for how the sport of football could be documented and filmed established its own mold and was years ahead of its time. Behind the leadership of Sabol and later his son, Steve Sabol (who passed away in 2012), NFL Films changed the way the sport of football is viewed and archived.
Whether it had a direct hand or not, NFL Films altered the way we watch and are able to view sports to this very day. NFL Films not only had an impact on the NFL, but it reached into other sports from time to time.
In 1977, NFL Films put together a recruiting film for Colorado State University and it was given the authentic NFL Films flair. The longtime and original iconic voice of NFL Films, John Facenda, provided the narration.
NFL Films is known for short features as well, including this 2004 feature on sprint football...
Without the influence and assistance from Sabol and NFL Films, who knows how much archived footage from college football’s history may have never been properly archived.
