It’s bad enough to suffer an injury at any point in a meaningless spring game that costs you the entire upcoming season.
When that kind of injury occurs on the final play of said meaningless game? That’s just beyond cruel and wholly unnecessary on the part of the football gods.
And yet that’s the position in which Tony McNeal finds himself this morning. In a release, Clemson announced Monday evening that the reserve quarterback suffered a torn ACL on the last offensive play of the Orange & White Spring Football game. As a result, McNeal will miss the entire 2012 season.
McNeal, who redshirted the 2011 season, was vying to become starter Tajh Boyd‘s backup. He had completed 4-9 passes for 49 yards in the spring game before going down with the injury.
McNeal isn’t the only Tigers QB to suffering from a health-related issue, although Morgan Roberts’ injury isn’t nearly as severe. The redshirt freshman underwent surgery Monday to repair an injured ankle. The school wrote that Roberts (pictured) should be ready to resume workouts this spring and summer.
As noted in the release, Roberts had a strong performance in the spring game as he completed 14-23 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown, adding 35 yards on six carries.
