One of the most highly-rated members of Michigan’s most recent recruiting class, it was thought that Michael Ferns might be able to make an immediate impact with the Wolverines. Instead, any impact he will make at the collegiate level will done elsewhere.
According to multiple media outlets, Ferns has decided to transfer out of the UM program and requested a release from his scholarship. The linebacker plans to transfer to West Virginia, ESPN.com reported.
No reason was given for Ferns’ decision.
UM, which is in the midst of a search for a new head football coach, has not commented publicly on Ferns’ status with the team, although a school spokesperson confirmed the player’s departure to mlive.com.
A four-star member of the Wolverines’ 2014 recruiting class, Ferns was rated as the No. 14 inside linebacker in the country and the No. 7 player at any position in the state of Ohio. The only 2014 UM defensive signee rated higher than Ferns was defensive back Jabril Peppers.
Ferns, who enrolled early and participated in spring practice, did not see the field in 2014, and will likely have to sit out the 2015 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules.
