Gus Malzahn was named the AP coach of the year on Monday, a week after the Auburn skipper won the FWAA’s Eddie Robinson Award.
Malzahn received 33 votes, topping Duke’s David Cutcliffe (17 votes), Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher (three votes) and Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio (three votes). He’s the fifth SEC coach win the honor and the second at Auburn, with Tommy Tuberville (2004) the other recipient.
“It’s very humbling,” Malzahn told the Associated Press. “Any time you get awards like this, it’s a team thing, as far as our staff and our players. It’s been fun to be a part of this year.”
These coach-of-the-year honors are well deserved for Malzahn, who engineered one of the greatest turnarounds in college football history at Auburn. Going from 3-9 to the BCS Championship will add a few trophies to a coach’s mantle.
