When news brokes that Jim Harbaugh would eventually land at the University of Michigan, questions began wondering how long he would remain in the college game.
Harbaugh is often viewed as the type of coach suited for the professional ranks, and his previous stint with the Stanford Cardinal seemed to be a means to an end before he received an opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers.
The Wolverines’ new head coach put those previous discussions to rest during an interview with the San Jose Mercury News’ Tim Kawakami.
“There’s a lot of great jobs, great opportunities, I know, in coaching,” Harbaugh said. “But for me, the Michigan job was–that was the best job for me.
“That was the decision I made that that was the case. I’m having a blast and really enjoying being in Ann Arbor…
“It was just a decision I made from the heart and that was it. I was going to go to Michigan.”
Obviously, Harbaugh could easily fall out of love with his alma mater for a myriad of reasons, and the honeymoon period is still in full effect.
However, the coach could have passed on his current job and waited for another opportunity in the NFL. If he didn’t land one this year, he almost certainly would have next year.
Those opportunities will continue to swirl around Michigan’s new head man, but home is where the heart is. And Michigan is Harbaugh’s home.
