Knee injury knocks Virginia Tech RB Marshawn Williams out for year

Virginia Tech is looking to wrap up the ACC Coastal Division this week, but they will do so with depth at running back getting a little more shallow. Marshawn Williams will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, although head coach Justin Fuente did not specify which knee was injured.

“He has handled it incredibly well and positive,” Fuente said, according to Andy Bitter of The Roanoke Times. “He is one of those kids that as I went over and tried to comfort him yesterday, he made me feel better. So we’re thankful for Marshawn and mindful that he won’t be with us for the rest of the season.”

Williams, a sophomore, is the third-leading rusher for the Hokies this season with 244 yards and two touchdowns. Last week against Notre Dame, Williams carried the football eight times for 28 yards in a 34-31 win. Fuente said Williams actually played against the Irish after having the injury, the extent of which was not diagnosed until after the game.

Virginia Tech will clinch the ACC Coastal Division this week with a win over Virginia or a North Carolina loss to N.C. State.
