Nick Brassell officially off the Ole Miss roster

It’s been a while in the making, at least as far as the rumor mill is concerned, but talented wide receiver/defensive back Nick Brassell is no longer part of the Ole Miss program. Again.

Rebels coach Hugh Freeze said Brassell will not be part of the team this fall. “We are very disappointed that Nick is no longer a part of our program,” Freeze said in a statement. “While he showed much improvement, it was not enough to regain eligibility status. We wish him the best.”

Freeze has been openly concerned about Brassell’s academic status, which has been cloudy at best since his arrival on campus in January. Brassell, originally a 2011 signee for Ole Miss, was forced to go the community college route in 2012 because of grades, so this was his second go around with the Rebels.

But there was never doubting Brassell’s upside. He made an immediate impact as a freshman by becoming the team’s second-leading receiver 24 catches for 336 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He just couldn’t get his other obligations in line, for whatever reason.
