Following up on earlier reports from the Boston Globe that Notre Dame offensive coordinator Charley Molnar was a finalist for the UMass coaching job, it appears that the longtime assistant will indeed get his shot at being the head coach of the Minutemen.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Molnar is expected to be announced as UMass’ next football coach on Thursday during a press conference “regarding the football program.”
Molnar met with UMass athletic director John McCutcheon last weekend in Pittsburgh to discuss the job.
Notre Dame has yet to issue a formal response to the report, but a source told the Tribune that the school was aware of the connection and expected him to land the job.
Molnar has been with Irish coach Brian Kelly since 2006 during stops at Cincinnati and Central Michigan. Notre Dame offensive line coach Ed Warinner could be a leading candidate to replace Molnar.
UMass will join the MAC next season after moving up from 1-AA football.
