For about a week there, it seemed Sonny Dykes would spend the 2016 season anywhere but Berkeley. Charlottesville, Houston, Columbia (either one), Timbuktu, you name it. Anywhere but Cal.
And then all those jobs he was rumored for filled up.
On Wednesday, Fox Sports insider Bruce Feldman reported the Dykes and Cal have agreed to renew their vows.
#Cal and Sonny Dykes are nearing agreement on a contract extension and raise, source tells @FoxSports. Deal imminent.
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) December 9, 2015
Though terms were not specified, Feldman wrote Dykes will receive an extension and a raise. Dykes signed a five-year deal worth around $2 million annually upon his hiring in December 2012. His original deal was set to expire after the 2017 season.
Lost in all the rumors of Dykes’ supposed imminent departure is that his three years on the job have been largely successful. In addition to getting the Golden Bears back to a bowl game for only the second time since 2009, Dykes has completely overhauled the abysmal APR situation he inherited from Jeff Tedford.
Cal will face Air Force in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl (2 p.m. ET Dec. 29, ESPN).
