Stanford clinches Pac-12 North title with Big Game victory

No. 9 Stanford clinched its second-straight Pac-12 North title with a 63-13 romp over rival California on Saturday night.

With the win, Stanford improves to 9-2 overall and 7-2 in conference, while California drops to 1-11 and 0-9.

Receiver Ty Montgomery scored Stanford’s first four touchdowns and finished with five touchdowns overall (matching the school record) while catching five passes for 160 yards. The Cardinal hadn’t scored 30 points in five-straight games, but Cal’s horrible defense cured what ailed them. Stanford gained a season-high 600 yards of total offense, including 418 through the air.

The loss was Cal’s 10th straight as the Bears finished up Sonny Dykes’ disappointing first season.

For Stanford, it was the culmination of a see-saw week. Fresh off a disappointing loss to USC, it looked like the Cardinal’s conference title hopes were up in smoke. But thanks to Arizona’s 42-16 win over Oregon, Stanford now has a chance to win back-to-back league titles for the first time since 1970-71.
