A few days after it was revealed Baylor receiver Corey Coleman won’t play in the Russell Athletic Bowl, the Big 12’s other All-American receiver was ruled out of his bowl game as well.
TCU senior receiver Josh Doctson will not play in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon, coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday. A wrist injury kept Doctson sidelined for TCU’s final two games of the regular season -- that one-point loss at Oklahoma and an overtime win over Baylor.
Despite only appearing in 10 games, Doctson set career highs with 79 receptions, 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns. It’s a shame the Mansfield, Texas native won’t get another opportunity to showcase his elite skills at the college level -- when healthy, he was one of the most dominant pass-catchers at the FBS level, with an 18-catch, 267-yard, three-touchdown game against Texas Tech this year standing as his best performance.
Doctson was a lightly-recruited three-star player out of high school and played the 2011 season at Wyoming, after which he decided to transfer to TCU -- where he had to walk on to the football team -- to be closer to an ill family member. His ascendance to stardom, coupled with quarterback Trevone Boykin, vaulted the Horned Frogs into the College Football Playoff discussion in each of the last two seasons.
Rotoworld’s Josh Norris ranks Doctson as the third-best receiver for the 2016 NFL Draft, behind only Coleman and Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell.
