In what can only be assumed to be little more than a well-designed publicity stunt, the San Diego Padres have drafted ex-Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel in the 2014 MLB Draft.

Manziel being drafted in the 28th round to play shortstop for the Padres may have been done for a couple of different reasons. First, maybe that whole football thing will not work out for the former Heisman Trophy winner, who was just drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Browns . If so, then the Padres could own the rights to sign Manziel. Given the placement in the draft, it is a very low risk move by San Diego’s baseball franchise.

Second, the Padres found a way to get the sports world talking about them on a Saturday that will see a horse race for the Triple Crown, the NHL Stanley Cup Final continue in Los Angeles and the NBA Finals taking another day off before returning to action on Sunday. I almost feel suckered into even having to discuss this, but it’s a slow afternoon.
