Tulane player dies in car accident

Unfortunately, we have some sobering news to deliver this evening.

According to the Beaumont Enterprise, Tulane linebacker Sule Osagiede died early this morning as the results of injuries suffered in a car accident.

Here’s the account of the accident from the Enterprise:

A Houston man thrown from a Jeep and killed in Thursday morning’s wreck on Interstate 10 East near 11th Street has been identified as 21-year-old Sule Oagiede [sic].

Oagiede’s [sic] passenger, a 25-year-old Louisiana man, was taken to the hospital, as was the 33-year-old Beaumont driver of an Expedition involved in the same wreck. Neither had life-threatening injuries, Beaumont Police Department spokespeople Crystal Holmes and Randy Stevens said.

The wreck occurred about 5:30 a.m. when the 2002 Ford and the 2002 Jeep Liberty were both westbound, according to investigation and statements. The Jeep seemed to be speeding, and the Expedition’s driver, fearing he was going to be hit, swung to the right. The Jeep went to the left, and both flipped, police said.

The sophomore linebacker played in nine games as a freshman in 2008, but missed all of the 2009 season after suffering a serious neck injury during the preseason. He was ultimately medically disqualified from playing football due to the injury.
