ULM QB Daniel Fitzwater passes away at age of 20

Unfortunately, there’s some sad and tragic news during what’s normally a day of enjoyment across most college campuses.

In a press release, Louisiana-Monroe announced that quarterback Daniel Fitzwater passed away abruptly early Saturday morning. No cause of death is known at this time.

Fitzwater was just 20 years old.

“The coaching staff and team are deeply saddened by the loss of a great person in Daniel,” said ULM head coach Todd Berry in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel’s family.”

“The ULM family is saddened to learn of Daniel’s death,” Dr. Nick J. Bruno, ULM president, said. “Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”

The kinesiology major from Shreveport, La., walked on to the ULM football program this spring after spending the past two summers at a JUCO. A knee injury he sustained during summer camp ultimately required surgery and kept him out of the early portion of the 2015 schedule.

Fitzwater is survived by, among others, his mother and father, Kelli and Mike Fitzwater, two brothers and one sister. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to those who have been impacted by Fitzwater’s passing.
