Video game dispute preceded shooting death of 2020 three-star prospect

An already tragic situation that developed earlier this week has turned even more tragic.

It was confirmed Tuesday night that Joshua Ancrum, a Class of 2020 football recruit, was killed in a shooting earlier that day in Miami Gardens, Fla. The details of what led to the tragedy were not divulged at the time.

A day later, however, Ancrum’s mother confirmed to Local10.com that her son was at a childhood friend’s house when an argument about a video game led to the shooting. Ancrum was airlifted to a local trauma center, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

From the television station’s website:

Miami Gardens police Officer Carolyn Frazer said a 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Jatwan Phillips appeared in court Wednesday morning and faces a charge of aggravated manslaughter. It’s unclear whether he will be charged as an adult.

A three-star cornerback, Ancrum held offers from Bowling Green, FIU, Southern Miss and USF.

“We are saddened at the news of Joshua’s passing,” FIU head football coach Butch Davis said in a statement. “We at FIU will be praying for his family, friends and teammates in these trying times.”

“Stop the violence,” Ancrum’s mother, Lisa Alvarez, pleaded.
