Rockies designated LHP Sammy Peralta for assignment.

The procedural move opens a spot on Colorado’s roster for veteran reliever John Brebbia. Peralta posted an inflated 10.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 4/2 K/BB ratio over 2 2/3 innings for the Rockies earlier this season. He figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and elect free agency.

The Rockies needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the arrival of Sean Sullivan on Friday and unfortunately Peralta drew the short straw this time around. The 28-year-old southpaw holds a 10.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and a 4/2 K/BB ratio over 2 2/3 innings with the Rockies this season.

Peralta will get another opportunity to work out of the Rockies’ bullpen with TJ Shook getting optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday. The 28-year-old southpaw has allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over 2/3 of an inning in one appearance with the big league club this season.

Peralta made just one appearance during his time with the big league club, giving up two runs on two hits and a pair of walks in just 2/3 of an inning. Blas Castano was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to take his place in the Rockies’ bullpen.

The 28-year-old southpaw will add a fresh arm to the Rockies’ bullpen mix for at least a few days while the Rockies figure out how to cover Chase Dollander’s spot in the rotation. Peralta has posted a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 14/5 K/BB ratio across 19 innings at the Triple-A level this season.
  • COL Relief Pitcher #57
Peralta didn’t end up making an appearance for the Rockies after being called up last week to fortify their bullpen mix. The 27-year-old lefty has made 30 relief appearances in the big leagues dating back to 2023.

Peralta was claimed off of waivers from the Brewers in early April. He’ll get his first shot to work out of the Rockies’ bullpen with Ryan Feltner (elbow) heading to the injured list on Friday. It’s possible it’ll be a short-term move as the Rockies decide how to replace Feltner in their rotation as someone will ultimately need to be sent back out to make room for that replacement starter next week. He’ll function in a middle relief role for first-year manager Warren Schaeffer.

Peralta will head to Triple-A as organizational relief depth for Colorado after being removed from Milwaukee’s 40-man roster earlier this week to make room for Luis Matos. The 27-year-old lefty has posted a serviceable 5.12 ERA across 45 2/3 innings in the big leagues since 2023.

The move frees up a spot on Milwaukee’s 40-man roster following the acquisition of former prospect Luis Matos from the Giants. The 27-year-old lefty holds a respectable 5.12 ERA — 5.05 xERA — 1.71 WHIP and 37/24 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings in the majors since 2023. There should be some interest on waivers in the coming days.

Peralta will open the regular season back at Triple-A after being claimed off waivers from the Angels last October. The 27-year-old lefty posted a serviceable 5.12 ERA (5.05 xERA), 1.71 WHIP and 37/24 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings in the majors since 2023.

Peralta, 27, has a 5.12 ERA and a 37/24 K/BB in 45 2/3 innings of relief work for the White Sox and Angels the last three seasons. That he throws just above sidearm makes him pretty tough on lefties, but his lack of velocity is a problem against righties. If he sticks on the 40-man, he’ll compete for a bullpen spot in spring training.

Jackson Kowar underwent right shoulder arthroscopic debridement surgery on Wednesday.

Kowar was removed from Baltimore’s 40-man roster back in late March after coming over from the Mariners in an offseason trade. The 29-year-old has made 54 career appearances in the big leagues dating back to 2021. It’s unclear how much time he’ll miss following the procedure.

Reds RHP Chris Paddack elected free agency.

Paddack heads to the open market after passing through waivers unclaimed. He was cut loose by the Reds earlier this week after posting an inflated 6.04 ERA across 22 1/3 innings of work. The 30-year-old makes some sense as an emergency stopgap option for an injury-ravaged club like the division-rival Cubs, who just lost Ben Brown (neck) and Edward Cabrera (hamstring) and are basically down to four healthy starters.

    Athletics released RHP Scott Barlow.

Barlow hits the free agent pool after failing to attract any interest on waivers. The 33-year-old was removed from the Athletics bullpen mix over the weekend after struggling to a bloated 6.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 29/19 K/BB ratio across 33 1/3 innings this season. He should be able to latch on somewhere as organizational depth.

    Rangers released 1B Blaine Crim.

Crim was claimed off waivers from the Rockies last month and wound up being cut loose following 21 games for Triple-A Round Rock. The 29-year-old first baseman hit .200 (13-for-65) with five homers and 12 RBI in 20 games between the Rangers and Rockies last year as a rookie.

Jack Flaherty (leg) is likely to be activated from the injured list to start against the Astros on Sunday.

All signs point to Flaherty returning to Detroit’s rotation this weekend after throwing 83 pitches in a minor league rehab start for Double-A Erie on Tuesday night. The 30-year-old will wind up requiring only a minimum stay on the injured list with an uncommon strain involving the tendons on the outside of his left lower leg and ankle.

Mick Abel is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow.

It’s a significant hit to Minnesota’s rotation as Abel will likely be sidelined until the later stages of the second half after Dr. Keith Meister recommended surgery following his latest setback. The 24-year-old has been out since mid-April with elbow inflammation. A more definitive timetable should emerge after the procedure, but fantasy managers shouldn’t expect him back anytime soon.

Zack Gelof (hand) is out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Giants.

Gelof appears to have avoided serious injury when his right hand was stepped on by Matt Chapman during Tuesday’s series opener, which subsequently ended his 24-game hitting streak. Athletics manager told reporters afterwards that Gelof is day-to-day after X-rays didn’t reveal any fractures and he didn’t require stitches. The 26-year-old has been phenomenal since the start of June, hitting .329 (23-for-70) with five homers, 10 RBI and two steals during that span. It’ll be veteran Jeff McNeil taking over at the keystone on Wednesday evening.

Cole Carrigg went 2-for-4 with a double, a sac fly and three RBI in the Rockies’ 8-6 defeat of the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Carrigg’s sac fly wasn’t actually caught. Wilyer Abreu had the hard liner to right with the bases loaded go off his glove, but he quickly recovered to throw out the runner advancing to second base. The runner on third did score on play, though, just as he almost surely would have had the ball been caught. Carrigg is now at .271/.379/.542 with three homers and 11 RBI in 14 games since being called up. His exit velocity numbers aren’t as impressive as his line, but given his stolen base potential, he seems worth rostering in mixed leagues while he plays regularly.

Kyle Freeland surrendered six runs and 11 hits in six innings against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

It probably would have been a little worse, but Carlos Narváez lost a leadoff triple in the sixth when it was ruled that he briefly lost touch with the bag as he popped up from his slide. This is the seventh time in 10 starts that Freeland has allowed at least six runs, though he managed to avoid a loss this time, as the Rockies erased a three-run deficit after he exited and won 8-6. Freeland is 1-7 with a 7.50 ERA, but his rotation status still shouldn’t be in any doubt. He’ll make his next start at home versus the Marlins.

Jimmy Herget picked up his second save with a perfect ninth against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Antonio Senzatela got the win, his eighth, after throwing hitless seventh and eighth innings. Herget was then handed a two-run lead and maintained it without incident. It’s the 11th career save for Herget, who returned from a shoulder impingement last week. His other nine all came with the Angels in 2022. He’s sporting a 4.42 ERA in 18 1/3 innings this season.
