Jorbit Vivas went 2-for-3 with a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning Tuesday in what turned out to be a loss to the Phillies.

Vivas was going to be the hero after taking Orion Kerkering deep and giving the Nationals an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the eighth tonight, but the Phillies had other ideas, scoring eight runs in the ninth. Vivas’s homer, his third in 228 plate appearances since he debuted with the Yankees last year, was sent 410 feet to center. That’s 23 feet farther than any other ball he’d hit as a major leaguer. He’s batting a respectable .259/.340/.353 in 162 plate appearances this season, but the start tonight was only his second in the Nationals’ last eight games, as he’s lost at-bats since Curtis Mead emerged.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 25-year-old slugger. Jorbit Vivas will start in his place at third base and bat eighth for the Nationals against Pirates’ right-hander Mitch Keller.
  • WSH Shortstop #5
The Red Sox will throw their third left-handed starter in this series, and while Abrams has started the last two, they will give him a day off on Wednesday. Nasim Nunez will slide over to shortstop with Jorbit Vias entering the lineup at second base and batting seventh. Andres Chaparro will also make his third straight start and bat third while Luis Garcia Jr. heads to the bench.
  • WSH Shortstop #5
Nasim Nuñez slides over to shortstop with Jorbit Vivas taking over at second base. Abrams is presumably day-to-day for the moment. The 25-year-old five-category threat has delivered first-round fantasy value this season, slashing .286/.366/.530 with 51 runs scored, 17 homers, 57 RBI and 12 steals in 328 plate appearances over 77 games. There should be an update on his status following the contest.
  • WSH 1st Baseman #45
Mead has settled in as the Nationals’ regular third baseman and has been hitting third in the lineup over the past few weeks. He’ll get a breather in this one though with Jorbit Vivas starting in his place at the hot corner and batting sixth against Merrill Kelly and the Diamondbacks on Friday evening in Arizona.
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #12
This is pretty stunning, given that House wasn’t just playing regularly but was also hitting third pretty much of all of the time. He was batting .227/.282/.399 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 177 plate appearances, with just a little more plate discipline than last year. Statcast also thought he was kind of unlucky, giving him a .249 xBA and a .427 xSLG coming into Monday’s game. However, House’s defense at third base has taken a pretty big step backwards, and his 16 percent swinging strike rate is concerning. Unlike with Dylan Crews, who is expected to replace him on the roster, there doesn’t seem to be any financial incentive for the demotion. House is just turning 23 in June, and if he gets a bit more selective at the plate, he’ll probably spend several years as an adequate regular. The Nationals figure to go with José Tena, Jorbit Vivas, and maybe some Curtis Mead at third base. That helps open up time for Crews, who will play a lot of outfield with James Wood and Daylen Lile probably seeing more time at DH.
  • WSH 2nd Baseman #26
It appears to be a routine night off for the speedy infielder, though he’s hitting just .202/.310/.226 through his first 149 plate appearances on the season so this could start to become a regular occurrence. Jorbit Vivas will start in his place at second base and bat seventh for the Nationals against Shane Baz and the O’s.
  • WSH Shortstop #26
Nuñez has seven steals in 15 games, which is great. He’s also slashing .192/.276/.212 in 58 plate appearances. His defense at second base has been good enough that he will continue to get a chance to start, but if he doesn’t start hitting soon, the Nationals may start shifting him to a pinch runner and defensive replacement. Jorbit Vivas will start at second base and bat seventh with Brady House at third base, Luis Garcia at DH, and Curtis Mead at first base.
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #12
House is still striking out nearly 30 percent of the time and has just two homers and six RBI though 15 games. He’ll take a seat with José Tena getting a look at DH and Jorbit Vivas at the hot corner for the second straight game. The 22-year-old’s fantasy appeal is almost nonexistent at the moment.
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #12
House started each of the team’s previous three games and hit in the middle of the Nationals’ lineup in each. He’ll get a breather against Roki Sasaki on Sunday afternoon though. Jorbit Vivas will cover third base while Jose Tena functions as the squad’s designated hitter on Sunday.
  • WSH 3rd Baseman #12
House has swung the bat well so far with an .824 OPS, but he’ll get a breather versus Andrew Painter in his MLB debut and the Philadelphia pitching staff. Jorbit Vivas will handle the hot corner and hit fifth while House rests.

The Braves are recalling JR Ritchie from Triple-A Gwinnett, reports The Athletic’s Jesús Cano.

Ritchie was scheduled to start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. He’s pitched to a respectable 4.87 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 37/25 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings in the big leagues this season. The 23-year-old can function as either a traditional starter or bulk relief option, depending on Atlanta’s needs. The hope here is that he’s not being rushed back because of a situation with Saturday’s starter Chris Sale. Stay tuned.

Rangers activated RHP Chris Martin from the 15-day injured list.

Martin return coincides with setup specialist Jakob Junis hitting the shelf with a hip impingement, which means he could be thrust into some high-leverage spots ahead of closer Jacob Latz right out of the gate. The 40-year-old veteran reliever is back after missing nearly five weeks with a shoulder impingement.

Rangers placed RHP Jakob Junis on the 15-day injured list with a right hip impingement.

Junis received an injection and there’s hope it’ll be a minimum stint on the injured list, according to MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry. He’s settled nicely into a setup role behind stopper Jacob Latz for the Rangers this season, which makes his absence a tougher one to swallow than most. The 33-year-old journeyman has posted a strong 2.80 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 27/6 K/BB ratio across 35 1/3 innings during his Texas debut. He’s also notched five saves during that span.

Konnor Griffin singled and stole two bases on Saturday, propelling the Pirates to a 7-1 victory over the Nationals.

Griffin singled and stole second base to lead off the contest before swiping home on a designed double-steal with veteran Bryan Reynolds later in the frame. The 20-year-old rookie sensation is up to 19 thefts through 58 games in his first taste of the majors. He finished 1-for-5 out of the leadoff spot in this one. He’s going to be a fantasy force for years to come with sky-hight five-category superstar potential.

James Wood went 1-for-2 with a leadoff homer on Saturday in a loss to the Pirates.

Wood clobbered his seventh leadoff blast of the season into the upper deck at Nationals Park, providing some fireworks during Washington’s annual Fourth of July matinee. The gargantuan 428-foot moonshot off Pirates starter Braxton Ashcraft carried a stratospheric 113.1 mph exit velocity. It was his 23rd round-tripper of the season. He also walked twice in the contest as the Nationals were shut out over the final eight innings by Ashcraft and a quartet of Pirates relievers.

Braxton Ashcraft allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings on Saturday in a win over the Nationals.

Ashcraft coughed up a tape-measure leadoff homer to James Wood but managed to keep the Nationals off the scoreboard into the middle innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and only issued a pair of walks. He’s posted at least seven punchouts in four consecutive starts since June 17. It was a much-needed rebound effort after getting tagged for three homers by the Phillies in his previous outing. He’ll face the Brewers at home in his final start before the All-Star break.

Zack Littell allowed one run over six innings on Saturday in a bulk relief outing against the Pirates.

Littell allowed three inherited runners to cross the plate after entering the contest in the second inning following lefty opener Carson Palmquist. He managed to reel off six innings of one-run ball on just 87 pitches afterwards, but the damage was already done. He struck out three and issued one walk. He’ll carry an underwhelming 5.02 ERA into his final first-half outing against the Yankees on Friday. He’s not a recommended fantasy option in that tough spot.

Reds activated RHP Hunter Greene from the 60-day injured list.

Greene returns to Cincinnati’s rotation after missing the first three months of the season recovering from surgery to remove bone chips and loose bodies from his pitching elbow. The hard-throwing 26-year-old fantasy ace shouldn’t have any workload restrictions in his long-awaited season debut after throwing 82 pitches over 6 1/3 innings during his final rehab start for Triple-A Louisville last weekend. He’s struggled to stay healthy since arriving in the majors a couple years ago, but delivered a phenomenal 2.76 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 132/26 K/BB ratio across 107 2/3 innings last year, making him one of the more impactful arms in the fantasy landscape on a per-inning basis.

Petty loses his spot with the Reds in a multi-inning relief role with ace Hunter Greene returning from the injured list to make his season debut. The 23-year-old has delivered a respectable 4.37 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 9/7 K/BB ratio across 22 2/3 innings this season.
