Colt Emerson goes hitless in loss to Pirates

It’s been a tough week for the 26-year-old right-hander as he was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday and now gets booted from the team’s 40-man roster to make room for Luke Maile on Thursday. It seems likely that he’ll slip through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the Royals.

Maile will add depth behind the plate for the Royals while Salvador Perez nurses a sore elbow. The 35-year-old backstop hasn’t appeared in a big league game this season and has hit .202/.324/.303 with two homers and nine RBI in 105 plate appearances at Triple-A Omaha this season.

With Salvador Perez dealing with a sore elbow, the Royals wanted to get an extra catcher on hand in case of an emergency, to Luke Maile was recalled from Triple-A at the expense of Rave on Thursday. The 28-year-old outfielder should get another opportunity with the Royals before the summer is through.

It remains to be seen whether or not the 30-year-old right-hander will accept the assignment or elect to peddle his wares on the open market once again. Paddack holds a 6.79 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 40/19 K/BB ratio over 57 innings in 14 appearances (nine starts) between the Marlins, Reds and Rangers this season.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for Peoples, who was acquired from the White Sox on Tuesday. The 25-year-old right-hander has compiled a 2.39 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 45/21 K/BB ratio across 37 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season. He’ll add another weapon from the right side for manager Skip Schumaker to deploy out of his bullpen.

Santos, 24, made just one appearance during his time with the Rangers, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while recording one strikeout in his two innings of work. He’ll continue to hone his craft at the Triple-A level until another opportunity arises with the Rangers.

The 31-year-old slugger missed the previous three games due to a left forearm strain. He’ll start in right field and bat seventh against Angels’ rookie right-hander Walbert Urena on Thursday evening in Seattle.

It doesn’t sound like anything serious, but the Royals did add Luke Maile to the roster on Thursday as an insurance policy. Perez is having a disappointing season at the dish, slashing just .201/.241/.327 with 10 homers and 30 RBI in 340 plate appearances. Carter Jensen is behind the dish and batting leadoff for the Royals while Starling Marte functions as the team’s designated hitter against Rays’ left-hander Ian Seymour on Thursday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Trevino’s homer off Jacob Misiorowski was hit at 98.5 mph with a 41-degree launch angle, but it pretty easily cleared the wall down the left field line. It was his first in 19 games this season. He hadn’t had a three-hit game since June 4 of last season.

He struck out only four. Burns’ velocity is dropping some; his 97.1-mph average on his fastball today matched his season low. He’s been under 98 mph in six straight starts after topping that mark in eight of his first 11 starts. His slider is down, too. He averaged 90.8 mph with that pitch in his first 14 starts, but he’s been at 89.6, 89.3 and now 89.1 mph in his last three outings. He’s already at 97 2/3 innings this year after finishing at 109 1/3 in his pro debut last year, so it seems quite possible that fatigue is setting in. He’s due to make his next start Wednesday against the Phillies, which would be his last outing before the break. There’s a good chance he’ll be named to the NL All-Star team, but the Reds might not want him to pitch.
