Ranger Suarez strikes out nine against Rockes

Considering the Guardians now have Patrick Bailey on the big league roster, another defensive-first catcher isn’t really a priority, so moving Cozart for Adell seems like good business. The 27-year-old has taken a step back this year, hitting .239/.287/.395 with 16 home runs and 62 RBI in 111 games, but he gives the Guardians some thump in the middle of their order. Adell is also under team control for one more season.

Cozart was the 38th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He is a tremendous defensive catcher who is hitting .239/.330/.384 in 79 games at Double-A with 10 home runs and 44 RBI. He will be, at worst, a solid backup catcher with his elite glove, but he’s also a left-handed hitter, so he could be a regular MLB starter if he can just be average with the bat.

According to Olney, the prospects and medicals have all been set, and the Red Sox are now reviewing everything to determine if they want to pull the trigger on the deal or not. Rutschman does have a troubling history of injuries, but he would be a major upgrade at catcher for the Red Sox. If he’s healthy.

With the Rangers suddenly looking to sell, they’re apparently hoping someone will pick up the approximately $1.3 million that Martin is still owed this season. The 40-year-old righty had been on the IL with a shoulder impingement since July 12, though he’d pitched six times on a rehab assignment. He’s given up 14 earned runs in 14 innings while healthy this year, but his velocity hasn’t really changed.

The Phillies will be mixing things all up to accommodate Arraez, with Bryson Stott moving to third, Alec Bohm going to first and Bryce Harper returning to the outfield for the first time since elbow surgery. It’s probably worth it to add Arraez to the lineup, though it would have been cheaper in prospect cost just to add an outfielder and keep the infield as it was. Arraez, a free agent at season’s end, should get a little value boost in Philly, though the ballpark upgrade probably doesn’t make much of a difference here like it would with a more traditional power hitter. The Giants will give Nate Furman and Osleivis Barabe looks at second base for now.

McDermott was designated for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for Cole Irvin. The 27-year-old McDermott was pitching out of the bullpen for the Dodgers, posting a 4.10 ERA in 26 1/3 innings in Triple-A, but he had once been a highly regarded starting pitching prospect in the Orioles system, so it remains to be seen what the Mets’ plan for him is.

Doyle was just activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday and went 2-for-7 with a double, a run, and an RBI in two games. The 28-year-old has struggled with injuries this season, but he looked great on his rehab assignment and slashed .260/.317/.446 in 149 games in 2024 with 23 home runs and 30 steals while playing elite defense in center field. His value obviously takes a hit outside of Coors Field, but if he is the regular center fielder in a good White Sox lineup, he will retain some deep league value. Mason Adams is a 26-year-old starting pitcher in Triple-A who has yet to make his MLB debut, and Vielma is a 16-year-old shortstop in the Dominican Summer League.

Trivino had been on the IL since July 8 with a back issue. He’s healthy again now, having pitched two scoreless innings in Triple-A on a rehab assignment, but the Phillies declined to make room for him in their bullpen. There’s a good chance he’ll get picked up by one of the teams looking for warm bodies after trading their relievers.

Henry was up for a few days last month with both Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs on the IL. He’s probably a better backup option than Stubbs, but good luck convincing the Phillies of that.

Marquez is a pretty solid return for two months of Luis Arraez and a middle reliever. The 20-year-old is the fourth-ranked prospect in the Phillies’ system and has dominated this season, posting a 1.68 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and 93/19 K/BB ratio in 59 innings split between Single-A and High-A. Marquez has good command of the strike zone with three pitches, including a plus changeup. How far he will go depends on his ability to gain feel for spin and pick up a breaking ball that he can consistently use against right-handed pitchers. Right now, he is using a cutter which has been working well against hitters at the lower levels, but he will likely need to add something else as he advances through the affiliates.
