Marlins activate Max Meyer from bereavement list

Meyer’s lone earned run in this game came via a long Mickey Moniak home run in the first inning. Then, he cruised all the way until the fifth inning when his defense let him down. After a leadoff single by Troy Johnston, Javier Sanoja booted a Kyle Karros ground ball at second base. Then, after a fielder’s choice and a groundout, Moniak got Meyer again with a two-run triple before Hunter Goodman socked a two-run homer on the very next pitch. Suddenly, this game had spun out and a heap of unearned runs were on Meyer’s ledger. Still, as far as starts in Coors Field go, this is a fine result. He’s scheduled for a two-start week against the Mariners and Guardians, both at home, as we head into the All-Star Break.

Meyer struck out five and walked two while induing mostly soft contact tonight; just three of the 17 balls in play against him were hit hard. It’s the fourth time in 17 starts this year that Meyer has gone without allowing a run and the 13th time that he’s allowed two runs or fewer. It remains to be seen whether he can really make 30+ starts, but there’s no denying how impressive he’s been in going 9-0 with a 2.60 ERA so far. For what it’s worth, his previous career highs are 111 innings and 22 starts in 2021, which he split between Double- and Triple-A. Meyer figures to make his next start Wednesday in Colorado.

The 26-year-old hurler returns back to Triple-A after spending three games with the Marlins, though he didn’t appear in a ballgame. The Marlins will announce a corresponding move prior to Friday’s battle against the Cardinals, which is expected to be the return of Max Meyer.

Meyer is poised to rejoin Miami’s rotation after being placed on the bereavement list earlier this week. The 27-year-old former top pitching prospect has posted a sparkling 2.31 ERA and 28/9 K/BB ratio across 23 1/3 innings over four starts since June 3.

He was not scheduled to start until Friday, so this will hopefully not affect that outing. We wish Max and his family the best.

Meyer tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up one run on three hits in the second. Casey Schmitt later took him deep for a solo homer in the fourth. Meyer gave the Marlins one more scoreless frame, ending his day after five with seven strikeouts. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 2.80 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 102/34 K/BB ratio across 90 innings into a start against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday.

Meyer punched out nine batters on the afternoon while scattering six hits and three walks. The lone tally against him came on an RBI single off the bat of Jake Mangum in the fourth inning. Meyer got 15 swings and misses on 105 pitches on the day, seven of those on his sweeper, while registering a strong CSW of 34 percent. He’ll look to replicate this fine effort as he carries a 7-0 record, 2.75 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and a 95/32 K/BB ratio (85 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Giants.

The runs came on homers from Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno. Meyer left with a 3-2 lead in the sixth, which was quickly expanded to 6-2, but the Diamondbacks recovered to tie the game before the Marlins won 10-6. Incredibly, Meyer still hasn’t taken a loss in 14 starts this year. He came into the season 6-11 in 25 starts. Meyer is due to make his next start Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Meyer got the victory, moving him to 6-0 with a 2.81 ERA. He actually gave up 10 hard-hit balls today, but they turned into 10 outs; one was a single and another one saw a batter reach on an error, but two turned into GIDPs. He gave up one other single on an 85-mph liner to the outfield. He struck out seven. Meyer’s next start will come at home versus the D-backs.

On the plus side for fantasy managers, Meyer racked up six strikeouts on the evening while issuing three free passes. The Mets got to him early in this one, pushing four runs across in the opening inning. They added on single runs in the third and fourth, including a solo shot off the bat of Mark Vientos. Meyer generated 10 swings and misses on 106 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll attempt to bounce back as he brings a stellar 2.97 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 74/25 K/BB ratio (66 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Nationals in Washington.
