Cubs placed LHP Hoby Milner on the 15-day injured list with appendicitis.

He underwent surgery this morning. Milner makes for an even dozen Cubs pitchers on the major league injured list. Even though his strikeout rate is all of the way down to 12 percent, the veteran southpaw has a 3.53 ERA in 35 2/3 innings this season. Expect him back soon after the All-Star break.
HLs: Mets fend off Braves after ninth-inning drama
With offensive contributions from their stars and rookies, the Mets did enough to quiet the Braves' late comeback attempt to earn the win at Truist Park on Star-Spangled Sunday.

Brown, who stranded the bases loaded after coming in with none out in the eighth, was robbed in broad daylight. Even though Brown had thrown just 11 pitches to get five outs, the Cubs brought in Milner to face Gavin Sheets with the bases empty. They had to know the Padres would counter, but since Milner wound up striking out pinch-hitter Ramón Laureano to end the game, it all worked out for Craig Counsell. Brown is still looking for his first save, and with Daniel Palencia close to returning, it might not materialize any time soon.

Milner heads to the Windy City after spending the previous season with the Rangers where he posted a strong 3.84 ERA — 3.39 FIP — and 58/21 K/BB ratio across 70 1/3 innings over 73 appearances. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw has experienced a noticeable decline in both fastball velocity and strikeout percentage last year, but he should remain an effective middle relief option for Chicago on a short-term pact.

It’s a one-year, $3.75 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. Milner gets little respect, but his left arm has produced a 3.55 ERA and a 245/63 K/BB in 264 innings the last four years. That his velocity and strikeout rate both declined at age 34 last season is definitely a little worrisome, but as a one-year deal, it should work out fine.

Still no word on the contract details, but the 33-year-old left-hander had been projected to earn around $2.5 million via arbitration before he was non-tendered by the Brewers. While he had a bit of a down season in 2024, Milner has established himself as one of the stronger left-handed relievers in all of baseball and he should be a welcomed addition to the Rangers’ bullpen.

No word yet on the financial terms of the deal, but Milner had been expected to earn around $2.5 million via arbitration before he was non-tendered by the Brewers in November. The 33-year-old southpaw had a down season in 2024, registering a 4.73 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 64/14 K/BB ratio across 64 2/3 innings. He adds a strong weapon from the left side to the Rangers’ bullpen.

From a FIP standpoint, Milner has been baseball’s most consistent reliever the last three years; he’s pitched 64-65 innings, struck out 59-64, walked 13-15 and given up 5-6 homers every season. Unfortunately, the ERAs haven’t been so consistent; he went from 3.76 in 2022 to 1.82 in 2023 to 4.73 last season. He still seemed to be worth keeping around at $2.5 million or so, but the Brewers disagreed.

Milner returns after missing just over three weeks recovering from a shoulder impingement. The 33-year-old lefty has been excellent the last two years for Milwaukee, but has struggled a bit this year to a serviceable 4.92 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 52/14 K/BB ratio across 53 innings (51 appearances, one start).

Milner is going to be out of action for at least two weeks while recovering from his shoulder trouble. The injury designation does clear a spot for DL Hall (knee, forearm) who will return from the 60-day injured list to make the start Sunday against the Reds. Milner likely won’t return to the Brewers until September, but there’s no timetable available just yet.

Milner was tasked with toeing the rubber as an “opener” on Tuesday against the Rangers. The veteran lefty ran into trouble in the first inning, allowing a double to Corey Seager, which was followed by an RBI single by Josh Smith, and was pulled after pitching a scoreless second. It was the first time all season that Milner went two or more innings, as Tuesday marked his first start of the season and his career. We wouldn’t expect him to draw another start any time soon.

This is pretty cool. Milner will make his first career start, technically, on Tuesday night after 269 relief appearances in the big leagues since 2017. It’ll be Bryse Wilson following him for a bulk relief outing afterwards.

Jakob Marsee left Sunday’s game against the Athletics with a right knee contusion.

Marsee has already undergone x-rays on the knee after he was hit by a pitch, and they returned negative. The 25-year-old is considered day-to-day, and he’ll have a chance to return to the Marlins’ lineup after an off-day against the Mariners on Tuesday.

Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) threw a bullpen session before Sunday’s game against the Red Sox.

Kikuchi’s bullpen session was the first since he was shut down with his shoulder injury. The left-hander will assuredly need to complete a few more sessions — and then at least a pair of rehab starts — before he could be an option for the Angels’ rotation later in the second half of the season.

Grayson Rodriguez (back) is expected to return to the Angels and start Friday’s game against the Twins.

Rodriguez looked sharp in his most recent rehab start; firing 5 1/3 innings of one-run baseball for Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday. The Angels have already optioned Sam Aldegheri to the minors who was previously scheduled to start that contest, so assuming no setbacks for Rodriguez, it should be the 26-year-old on the bump for that contest.

Mike Trout (hamstring) was able to run the bases with no issue before Sunday’s game against the Red Sox.

Trout continues to make solid progress from the hamstring issue that has seen him miss a little over two weeks. The hope is that the 34-year-old future Hall of Famer will be back in action this week, with Trout mentioning Saturday that his hope is Tuesday or Wednesday. He was voted an All-Star starter, and it seems likely he’ll be participating in that event even with the injury.

Jake Burger hit a solo homer in a loss to the Tigers on Sunday.

Burger gave the Rangers an early 1-0 lead in the third inning with his solo blast off Casey Mize. Burger now has homered 15 times in 2026 while driving in 53 runs wish a slash of .243/.309/.432 in his second season with the Rangers. You can do worse. You can probably do better.

Riley Greene homered, tripled and drove in four runs while going 3-for-4 in a 6-3 win for the Tigers over Rangers on Sunday.

Greene also drew a walk, so it was a four-reach day for the 25-year-old talent. His homer was his 13th of the season; a two-run blast off Kumar Rocker. He came a double short of the cycle, and in the process he saw his slash improve to .292/.380/.474. He hasn’t shown as much power as he did in 2025, but he’s been a more well-rounded player in 2026. It’s a fair trade-off.

Kenley Jansen didn’t allow a run while picking up a save against the Rangers on Sunday.

Jansen was able to get the save while throwing just 10 pitches and not allowing a hit, not getting a strikeout and not giving up a walk. It’s now 10 for the 38-year-old, and his ERA dips to a still-disappointing 4.98 on the campaign.

Kumar Rocker took a loss after allowing three runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Tigers on Sunday.

Rocker allowed five hits, one walk and struck out four. He gave up a pair of runs on a two-run homer from Riley Greene, and two more in the fifth in a shaky outing for the 26-year-old. Rocker has a 2-7 record on the season with the loss, but he’s pitched better than that for the majority of the campaign. He’ll look to bounce back in his final first-half start against the Astros at home come Saturday.

Casey Mize allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings while being credited with a win over the Rangers on Sunday.

Mize continues to pitch well, although his ERA did increase ever-so-slightly from 2.63 to 2.64 with this effort. He didn’t have the same swing-and-miss he did against the Yankees on Monday, but he limited the hard contact while allowing just five hits, striking out four and getting into the seventh inning. The former first-overall pick has looked the part thus far, and he’ll have a chance to keep it going against the Phillies on Saturday.

Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer in a win for the Astros on Sunday over the Rays.

Paredes extended the Astros’ lead to 2-0 with his solo blast. The 27-year-old also singled to improve his slash to a respectable .257/.348/.423 over the first 92 games of the campaign. It’s also worth noting that he’s swung the bat much better than that since the end of May, as he he forged an .877 OPS in June and has picked up hits in all four July contests.
