The 34-year-old hurler was just signed to a one-year deal on Monday, but he’ll head right back to waivers after registering an 18.00 ERA and 3.00 WHIP across three innings in his two appearances with the club. Jose Espada was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move to take his place in the O’s bullpen. Once again, it’s possible that Trivino attracts some interest on waivers.

The deal is now official. Trivino provides Baltimore with some quality middle relief depth after opting out of his minor league deal with the Phillies last week. The well-traveled 34-year-old has made 332 career appearances in the majors since 2018 and has notched 37 saves during that span.

Given the lack of quality bullpen depth around the league, he shouldn’t be out of work for long.

The Phillies have one of the deepest and most talented bullpens in all of baseball, so it was always going to be tough for Shugart to crack the Opening Day roster. De La Cruz’s chances of earning a spot took a big hit when the Phillies announced that Justin Crawford had made the team. Both players will start out the year as extra depth at the Triple-A level.

Phillies president Dave Dombroswki has routinely re-stocks the club’s relief cupboard with proven veteran arms at the Triple-A level with Trivino becoming the latest addition to fit that specific mold. The 34-year-old journeyman has plenty of high-leverage experience and actually finished last season with Philadelphia after making 37 appearances in the NL West between the Dodgers and Giants. He’ll compete for a spot in the Phillies bullpen during spring training.

Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts told reporters on Thursday that right-hander Edwin Díaz (elbow) threw 28 pitches during a successful bullpen session.

Roberts also noted that the Dodgers’ closer looked “really good” during the session. He remains on track to rejoin the club’s bullpen after the All-Star break, which would shift Tanner Scott back into a setup role.
