Pagán wrapped up a minor league rehab assignment over the weekend and will regain his role as Cincinnati’s closer. The 35-year-old veteran stopper has been out since early May working his way back from a hamstring strain. He should be rostered in all fantasy leagues based on his track record and minimal in-house competition with the Reds.

Chase Petty tossed a scoreless ninth inning to convert the save against the Pirates on Saturday.

Petty got the call to close out the game against the Pirates after the team took a two-run lead in the top of the ninth. He worked around one walk, keeping the Pirates off the board to secure the win and lock down his first save of the season. It’s been a full-on committee in Cincinnati while Emilio Pagán has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Pagán, currently on a rehab assignment, could be returning soon to take back the closer role.

Reds recalled RHP Chase Petty from Triple-A Louisville

Petty was once a top prospect for the Reds, but he is pitching to a 6.17 ERA in 42 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season. His last two appearances for the Reds have been as a starter, but they don’t seem to need one right now, unless the Reds are planning to use him as a spot starter when they have six games in a row beginning on Friday.

Chase Petty surrendered four runs in five innings and struck out only one against the Cardinals in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Petty was just the 27th man tonight, so he’s going back to Triple-A on Sunday. Still, he didn’t really help his chances of getting a longer look later. He gave up 10 hard-hit balls, and he generated just three misses on 33 swings. Between his three outings last year and two this season, he has a 10.80 ERA as a major leaguer.

Petty will start Game 2 while Chris Paddack toes the rubber in Game 1. Petty made his season debut against the Cubs back on May 4, allowing three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings while striking out one. Saturday will be his second start of the year with the big league club.

Bummer. At least the Reds are getting Nick Lodolo back on Tuesday, but they might need to again turn to Chase Petty if Lowder lands on the IL, as seems likely. Lowder ended up being charged with three runs in three-plus innings today against the Cubs, as both guys he left on in the fourth came around to score.

Petty performed admirably in a spot start against the Cubs earlier this week, allowing three runs over 5 2/3 innings while not factoring into the decision. The 23-year-old’s biggest highlight was a nifty, athletic play off the mound, fielding a chopper up the third-base line and delivering an on-target throw to first. He’ll be back at some point later this summer when the Reds need another starter.

Considering the difficult matchup against the Cubs, Petty pitched well. With Nick Lodolo (blister) due back this week, Petty is likely headed back to Triple-A, where he had a 4.38 ERA this year.
