Kenley Jansen works uneventful ninth for save

The 36-year-old Sewald was great for Arizona early in the season, recording 18 saves, a 30 percent strikeout rate, and a 3.18 ERA in 28 1/3 innings until June 19th. He did begin to struggle, and from Jun 19th until he lost his closer’s job on July 24th, he posted a 9.00 ERA in nine innings but also still recorded six saves. Yet, even when moving to lower-leverage innings, Sewald continued to give up runs, and so the Diamondbacks decided to move on. He will leave the team with the 6th most saves in team history with 53.

Johnson was 1-for-12 with six strikeouts and two walks in his 14 plate appearances for the Reds this season. He was backing up at both second base and first base, so the Reds will likely need to make a transacation to add bench depth.

The former White Sox shortstop is only 33 years old but said that he “fought to try to get back for the last two or three years. I trained. I just couldn’t get the body to operate where it used to.” While many people will remember his struggles over the last few seasons or his fight with Jose Ramirez, Anderson also had multiple highly productive MLB seasons. He won the AL batting title in 2019, was a Silver Slugger in 2020, and was an AL All-Star in 2021 and 2022. He will retire with a career .276/.307/.407 slash line in 991 MLB games with 98 home runs and 122 stolen bases. The White Sox will have a ceremony for him on September 17th.

Briceño is the 54th-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. He hit .297/.382/.672 in 17 games at Double-A after being activated from the 60-day IL in July following wrist surgery. Briceño also tallied eight home runs, 19 RBI, and a 16/9 K/BB ratio. He’ll likely need to play first base long-term in Detroit with Dillon Dingler entrenched as the team’s franchise catcher.

Burke slashed .285/.367/.603 in 96 games with Double-A Biloxi. He posted 30 home runs, 88 RBI, and 28 steals but also had a 102/44 K/BB ratio. The Brewers’ offense rarely has a hitter with this type of power and swing-and-miss, so it will be interesting to see how Burke fits as he rises up the affiliates.

Amick came to the Mets in a deadline deal for A.J. Minter and has been on fire since. In his seven games in the Mets organization, he’s hitting .333/.429/.958 with five home runs, 13 RBI, and one steal. He does have 11 strikeouts in those seven games, so swing-and-miss will always be part of his game, but he has 28 home runs in 93 total games at Triple-A this season, so the power is very real.

Moore is hitting .307/.434/.517 in 78 games at Triple-A with 10 home runs, 56 RBI, and 13 steals with an 84/65 K/BB ratio. With the Angels out of playoff contention, it would make sense for them to call Moore up again and give him an actual chance at playing time.

Veen is now hitting .455/.514/1.121 in eight games in August with five home runs, 12 RBI, 13 runs, and two steals. Unfortunately, with Mickey Moniak, Cole Carrigg, and Jake McCarthy in Colorado, there is no room for Veen.

King is hitting .284/.361/.469 in 41 games at Triple-A with seven home runs, 29 RBI, and four steals. With CJ Abrams continuing to struggle defensively at shortstop, it’s fair to wonder if the Nationals would consider a position change in the offseason to ensure a place for King in the 2027 lineup.

Cruz played seven innings in center field on Sunday and will now be evaluated by the Pirates. His results haven’t been great in Triple-A, but if the organization deems that he’s healthy enough to return, we could see Cruz back in the lineup this week.
