Paul Sewald struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 21st save Thursday against the Padres.

Sewald sandwiched strikeouts of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado around a Jackson Merrill flyout. He’s still blown just one save opportunity this season.

James Schiano talks about the impact "rookie superstar" Munetaka Murakami can make upon his return to the Chicago White Sox, where he can strengthen Chicago on and off the field.

Mets recalled RHP Tobias Myers from Triple-A Syracuse.

Myers will rejoin the low-leverage reliever mix for the Mets over the weekend. He has a 6.21 ERA in 42 innings and has been as disappointing a part of the Freddy Peralta trade as Freddy Peralta has so far.

Mets designated RHP Dan Hammer for assignment.

For sale, one Hammer, never used on its one day on the big league roster.

Mets purchased INF Zack Short’s contract from Triple-A Syracuse.

Short went 1-for-8 in three games with the Mets earlier this year. He’ll likely just be bench depth with the occasional start rather than a threat to be in the major league lineup in any real role.

Mets placed 1B/3B Mark Vientos on the 10-day injured list with a right hand fracture.

He’ll miss several weeks, perhaps enough to knock him out until September. Vientos hasn’t been much of a regular since his 2024 run, and proved completely unable to hit right-handed pitchers when given the chance during Jorge Polanco’s absence. He can be dropped in most fantasy leagues at this point.

Colt Emerson is not in Seattle’s starting lineup on Friday against the Rays.

Emerson is 3-for-22 in July, so we’d understand him getting a day to clear his head if that’s what this is. Buddy Kennedy will start at third base with J.P. Crawford at shortstop against RHP Nick Martinez.

Spencer Steer is batting third and playing center field in Friday’s game against the Cubs.

Steer has not appeared in a game in center field in his major-league career. So this could be fun. The 28-year-old is hitting .240/.323/.421 this year while mostly batting in the top half of the Reds order over the past month or so. This is a stab at getting T.J. Friedl out of the lineup.

Daylen Lile is not in Washington’s starting lineup against the Yankees on Friday.

Lile has been slumping heavily since the middle of June, hitting .215/.244/.354 over this past 82 plate appearances with just two homers and one stolen base. Andrés Chaparro will bat sixth in Lile’s place against LHP Ryan Weathers.

Dillon Dingler (hand) remains out of the Tigers’ lineup for the second day in a row.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Tigers took it easy on Dingler heading into the All-Star break, so we wouldn’t be stunned if he misses this weekend series. Jake Rogers is taking over at catcher and batting ninth against the Phillies tonight.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Cardinals and JJ Wetherholt are in agreement on a long-term contract extension that will buy out multiple years of free agency.

Wetherholt has been an instant hit for the Cardinals, batting .267/.362/.411 with 13 homers and nine stolen bases as we near the end of the season’s first half. Passan doesn’t put a dollar figure on this, but notes it’s a “nine-figure deal,” while New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported it was a eight-year, $112.5 million contract. Wetherholt should be a long-term building block for the Cardinals, as the former top prospect instantly took over as the Opening Day second baseman and never looked back. He’s currently 12th in FanGraphs’ WAR at 3.6.

ESPN’s Alden González reports the Twins are acquiring RHP Tommy Nance from the Blue Jays for C/3B Ryan Sprock.
    C

Nance had a 1.99 ERA in 30 games pitched last year for the Jays and, despite missing time to injury this year, has a 3.82 ERA in 33 innings for the Jays in 2026. He’s ostensibly bullpen help for the Twins, though we can’t help but wonder if the Jays really think highly of him considering they’re also not far out of a playoff spot. Sprock, a 2025 eighth-round pick, has a .306/.436/.441 line for Single-A Fort Myers as a 21-year-old and was recently promoted to High-A Cedar Rapids.
