Paul Blackburn worked two innings to pick up a save against the Nationals on Sunday while not allowing a run.

It’s the first save of the season for Blackburn, and while not guaranteed to be the last, there’s a pretty decent chance it is. The 32-year-old has done a nice job for New York in his action out of the bullpen, and the pair of scoreless frames lower his ERA to 2.22.

Blackburn hasn’t thrown more than two innings in an appearance since June 17, so he figures to get a shot at two innings today. With Max Fried and Carlos Rodon both sidelined, there is a chance that the Yankees could stretch Blackburn out to fill a starting pitching role, but that seems to be a long-shot right now.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Weathers has been sick recently and will slot back into the rotation against the Orioles on Monday. The 26-year-old told reporters he lost nearly 10 pounds due to a viral infection that threw off his typical routine between starts. It’ll likely be a bullpen game on Thursday against the Rangers with long reliever Paul Blackburn taking the ball to kick things off.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #58
Blackburn struck out four and lowered his spring ERA to 1.48 in 12 1/3 innings. It’d be rather odd if the Yankees employed both Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough in middle relief — a lot of teams won’t even carry one true long man — but that would seem to be the initial play. One of the two would likely sub in if a starter goes down in the short term, but if the current rotation stays healthy, things will get very cramped once Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole are back.

Blackburn got the lesser split-squad, so the only regular he faced today was Addison Barger. Blackburn averaged 93.7 mph with his sinker, which is one of the best marks of his career. He averaged right around 90 mph when he debuted in the majors in 2017, but he’s steadily improved in recent years and came in at 92.4 mph in his 39 major league innings last season.

The deal, which was agreed to back in late December, is finally official. Blackburn returns to New York as a versatile swingman capable of making the occasional spot start while gobbling up multiple innings in relief. The 32-year-old veteran posted a pedestrian 4.39 FIP, 1.51 WHIP and 34/12 K/BB ratio across 39 innings over 15 appearances between the Mets and Yankees this past season. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.

He’ll make $100,000 extra for 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 innings thrown. Blackburn will probably compete with Ryan Yarbrough for the fifth rotation spot coming out of spring training, with the loser of the battle going to middle relief. However, Carlos Rodón could be back to claim the rotation spot before the end of April.

Blackburn bolsters New York’s relief mix, likely in a versatile swingman capacity, heading into the final five weeks of the season. The 31-year-old righty posted a calamitous 6.85 ERA across 23 2/3 innings (seven appearances, four starts) before being released by the Mets earlier this week.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #58
Now that he can be had for the major league minimum, Blackburn will likely quickly be picked up by some team searching for innings. He had a 6.85 ERA in four starts and three relief appearances for the A’s, but his velocity was about as good as ever and his peripherals weren’t too much worse than usual.

Blackburn has been jettisoned from New York’s 40-man roster to pave the way for top pitching prospect Nolan McLean to ascend to the majors for Saturday’s start against the Mariners. The 31-year-old righty has been limited to just seven appearances (four starts) this season due to injury, finishing with a disastrous 6.85 ERA across 23 2/3 innings of work.

Blackburn, back from a shoulder impingement, just posted a 2.42 ERA in 22 1/3 innings over four starts for Syracuse, but the Mets are planning on sticking him in middle relief instead of giving him Frankie Montas’s rotation spot. Blackburn has a 7.71 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances in the majors this season.

Greg Jones has elected free agency.

Jones had been designated for assignment by the Brewers before the All-Star break and passed through waivers unclaimed. He went just 2-for-23 (.087) with a 10/0 K/BB ratio in his limited action with the big league club. He’s now free to peddle his wares on the open market.

Reid Detmers will start for the Angels in Friday’s second half opener against the Tigers.

Detmers has been a viable fantasy option for most of the first half of the season despite winning only three games, as he registered a 4.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 123/35 K/BB ratio across 108 2/3 innings through his first 19 starts. He’ll be followed in the Angels’ rotation by Grayson Rodriguez and Ryan Johnson in their weekend series against the Tigers. Jose Soriano and Walbert Urena will pitch on Monday and Tuesday respectively against the Cardinals.

Peter Lambert will start for the Astros in Friday’s second half opener against the Orioles.

The 29-year-old right-hander had a terrific first half for the Astros, compiling a 3.14 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and an 81/33 K/BB ratio across 86 innings through his first 15 starts. At this stage, he should be considered a viable weekly option in all mixed leagues. Spencer Arrighetti will follow him on Saturday with Hunter Brown getting the ball in Sunday’s series finale in Houston.

Bailey Ober will start for the Twins as they open the second half of the season against the Cubs in Chicago on Friday evening.

He’ll be followed by Taj Bradley on Saturday afternoon and Zebby Matthews on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The expectation is that Joe Ryan would then start on Monday against the Guardians in Cleveland. Ober is coming off of a decent first half where he registered a 4.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 51/19 K/BB ratio over 71 2/3 innings in his first 13 starts.

Gerrit Cole will start for the Yankees in Friday night’s second half opener against the Dodgers.

Cole will be followed by Ryan Weathers on Saturday and Cam Schlittler on Sunday. The 35-year-old hurler had a solid first half in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 4.04 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 47/11 K/BB ratio over 49 innings of work through his first nine starts.

According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks plan to promote Tyler Locklear from Triple-A Reno prior to Friday’s second-half opener.

He’ll take the roster spot that was vacated when Tommy Troy (shoulder) landed on the injured list. Lockler, 25, has slashed an impressive .313/.394/.502 with eight homers and 36 RBI in 241 plate appearances over 54 games at Triple-A Reno this season. He should get an opportunity to see regular action at first base and could make for an interesting deep league or NL-only pickup.

Roki Sasaki will start the Dodgers’ second half opener against the Yankees on Friday evening in New York.

He’ll be followed by Emmet Sheehan on Saturday and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Sunday. The Dodgers have not announced when Shohei Ohtani will return to the rotation. That makes it likely that it’ll be Justin Wrobleski and Eric Lauer in some order for the first two games against the Phillies in Philadelphia to open next week.

Justin Crawford (knee) is batting ninth for the Phillies on Thursday.

He missed Friday and Saturday with the injury before the All-Star break, and sat Sunday as well though he debatably wouldn’t have played against a left-handed starter either way. There’s no real fantasy value for Crawford at this point as he’s hitting just .263/.312/.353 with 12 stolen bases, but it’s good to see him back in the lineup.
