Irvin (shoulder) begins rehab assignment in FCL

Irvin struck out six but didn’t pitch well enough to win. He now has a 5.80 ERA on the season. While Washington has turned its franchise around offensively, there’s still work to do on the rotation. The 29-year-old made 33 starts in back-to-back seasons entering 2026, but he’s unlikely to be part of the team’s future plans. He’s lined up for a road game in Miami next time out.

Irvin has essentially alternated quality starts with clunkers of the past two months, and this one qualifies as the latter. He gave four hits — one of those a homer by Pete Crow-Armstrong — and walked two while striking out four against the tough Cubs’ lineup. Irvin now has a 5.79 ERA on the season, and it would be foolish to trust him as a fantasy streamer against the Mets on Sunday.

Irvin gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three. He hasn’t completed six innings in any of his 13 starts this year. It’s tough to win games like that, which is why Irvin has only won two starts this year. He also has a 5.37 ERA. Irvin is lined up to face the Cubs at home next week.

Irvin struck out one batter on the evening while issuing a pair of walks. He blanked the Braves through the first three innings, then served up a solo homer to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the fourth and a two-run blast to Mike Yastrzemski in the fifth. Irvin then started the sixth with a pair of walks before turning the ball over to the bullpen — and both inherited runners came around to score. Irvin generated five whiffs on 61 pitches on the night, posting a miserable CSW of just 16 percent. He’ll try to improve upon his 5.56 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and a 59/24 K/BB ratio (56 2/3 innings) when he takes on the Phillies in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

This was reported yesterday but is now official. Irvin has missed the last two months with a shoulder injury and has a 5.23 ERA over 51 2/3 innings in 11 starts this season. He is not a recommended fantasy option.

He’ll presumably require a couple weeks to sufficiently build up his pitch count and stamina before returning to Washington’s rotation sometime in early-to-mid August.

He was likely a few weeks from making it back to the bigs anyway after just facing hitters for the first time on Wednesday, so the transfer won’t materially impact his timeline. Irvin is returning from a right shoulder strain. The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for Tom Cosgrove.

Irvin was placed on the injured list on May 24th with a right shoulder strain. He faced hitters on the field on Wednesday and could begin a rehab assignment as soon as next week if his arm responds well to the live batting practice session.

Nationals manager Blake Butera told reporters Irwin is going through strengthening exercises, but has yet to begin a throwing progression after hitting the injured list with a shoulder strain back on May 24. The 29-year-old is likely facing an extended absence given the nature of the injury, but remains without a definitive return timeline.
